Ilmu yang mempelajari phonetic symbol adalah Fonologi, yang biasa di pelajari oleh teman teman yang fokus kuliahnya di sastra. Dalam kamus kamus yang sudah bertaraf international, symbol ini biasanya selalu di lampirkan di awal, untuk membantu para siswa, khususnya pemula, untuk mengetahui cara membaca sebuah kata.
